Q. Is it Correct That When Using SharePoint 2010 with Office 2010, the Windows 7 BranchCache Feature Isn't Used? (WindowsITPro)
One of the features of Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 is the use of a new protocol, MS-FSSHTTP, which facilitates synchronization of files via SOAP over the HTTP protocol. This new protocol allows locking of portions of a file, allowing the concurrent co-authoring of the same file. It also lets you download and upload only changes to an Office file, instead of the entire file (which is what occurs when using WebDAV).

Internet Explorer 9 Growing Fast, Despite Beta Tag (TechRadar)
Microsoft's internet Explorer 9 beta has been downloaded 23 million times, and now accounts for 0.5 per cent of all internet users worldwide, according to Net Applications. Although it is still in beta – IE9 has proven a hit for Microsoft as it looks to offer a 'more beautiful experience'. IE8 currently accounts for 34.17 per cent of users worldwide, but Microsoft is wary of its browser market share being eaten in to by the likes of Google's fast growing Chrome browser.

Bing Setting the Record Straight (Bing Community)
I was unable to attend the Farsight conference yesterday but watched events unfold online and wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts and make sure everyone is clear about a few things. It was interesting to watch the level of protest and feigned outrage from Google. One wonders what brought them to a place where they would level these kinds of accusations. Before we explore that, let me clear up a few things once and for all.

Windows Azure Futures: Turning the Cloud Into a Supercomputer (ZDNet)
February 1 is considered the “one year” anniversary of Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform (even though February 2 is the actual date that billing was “turned on”). Last year, Microsoft said it had 10,000 Azure customers; this week officials are saying they have 31,000, though they are refusing to say how many of these are paying customers, how many are divisions of Microsoft, etc. As I noted last year, Microsoft has been slowly and steadily adding new features to Azure. But I haven’t written much about longer-term Azure futures. Until today.

Yahoo! Blames Microsoft For Phantom Data Use (International Business Times)
Yahoo! has blamed Microsoft software design for the phantom data use that occurs on Windows Phones. Recent reports have suggested that Windows 7 Phones connected to Yahoo!'s mail servers are transmitting twenty-five times as much information as necessary. This has major consequences for users with tiered mobile service plans, which charge fees if users go over their monthly limits.

Could the U.S. Shut Down the Internet? (CNN)
It seemed so easy for Egypt. Just order a shutdown of the country's internet connections and -- bam -- it happens. But is such an authoritarian action transferable? Could the U.S. government shut down American internet connections? And is it possible for the global internet to be toppled? Technically, yes, internet experts said Wednesday, shortly after Egypt's government restored internet connections there as violent political protests continued. But it's highly unlikely.

The 3 Most Common SharePoint Strategy Mistakes (T3chnicalLead)
Francois Pienaar (who I interviewed a few months ago) loves SharePoint. He drops nuggets of SharePoint info all the time, so when I asked him, “What are the 3 most common mistakes that you see organizations making in their SharePoint strategy?“, I wasn’t surprised to receive the following points with much enthusiasm.

New Video: Creating a Profile Synchronization Connection in SharePoint Server 2010 (To the SharePoint)
Profile sync in SharePoint Server 2010 is quite powerful, but it takes a lot of steps to configure it. To help you get profile sync set up, we've created a video that demonstrates many of the steps. The video covers: Creating a connection to Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS); Creating a connection filter; Mapping profile properties; Importing properties from AD DS; Exporting a property back to AD DS; Verifying the results in SharePoint and in AD DS.

Configuring SharePoint 2010 Rich Text Editor to Allow ‘Paste Plaintext’ Only (Waldek Mastykarz)
Recently I wrote an article how you can configure the SharePoint 2010 Rich Text Editor (RTE) to better support consistent content authoring. Shortly after I published the article, I got a question how to force the RTE to allow the content editors to paste content only as plain text removing all formatting. From the consistency point of view this is a great deal especially if RTE is not your primary text editor and you’re pasting the content from another text editor. So how do you configure the SharePoint 2010 Rich Text Editor to allow pasting content only as plain text?

SharePoint and Access: Power to the People (SharePoint News, Views and "How To's")
SharePoint and Access cater for an essential part of every organisation: the Power User. Whether it’s a full-time SharePoint Architect, or Jeff who’s “Good With Spreadsheets”; both can make use of these tools to help bridge the gap between custom developed systems and bought-in solutions.

Working with URLs in SharePoint 2010 JavaScripts (Wictor Wilén)
The SharePoint 2010 user interface relies heavily on JavaScripts, just take a look at the Ribbon which is completely generated by a bunch of JavaScripts. Often customizations of SharePoint also involve JavaScripts. You need it to open modal dialogs, add notifications, create Ribbon Page Components etc. etc.. JavaScript is just one of the programming languages you must know as a SharePoint developer - and you can do amazing stuff with it (just take a look at SPServices by Marc D Anderson).

SharePoint 2010 Lessons Learned, Part 4: How to Grant Permissions (SharePoint Blank)
I'm going to take a short break from mining my experiences with page construction and editing over at the Sharing the Point site to share some newly acquired knowledge right here at "home."  Fear not though, for I'll be doing so within the context of the already-in-progress "real-world SharePoint 2010 lessons learned" series.  How will I manage to accomplish this feat of blogging derring-do?  Read on. Today's recipe is going to be the granting of permissions, with a dash of upgrading from 2007 content added to taste.
