"Bamboo World Tour" Day 3; IE9 to be Released March 14; Overthinking Governance Prevents Innovation
Phase one of the Bamboo World Tour is now complete and our teams from La Jolla and Baltimore are on their way home. It sounds as though John managed to find his way from Sydney to Beijing and should begin posting updates shortly. OK, quick, unnecessary topic change... How many of you will be getting an iPad 2 this weekend? I've been debating picking up a Xoom, but the new iPad looks pretty sweet so I am looking for advice on which direction to go. --Chris
Top News Stories How SharePoint 2010 Can Be Used as a Collaboration Hub (CMSWire) Collaboration, as we have seen this week, can take on many forms. A typical enterprise will own and maintain a number of different systems to help facilitate this collaboration. While many of these systems will serve a specific purpose, too many can be confusing, and actually prevent what they set out to achieve — working together effectively.
IT Managers Choosing SharePoint Over WordPress (CIO) Despite an increase in popularity of WordPress, IT teams are still choosing to deploy SharePoint as an enterprise CMS, a local chief architect has claimed. SSW (Superior Software for Windows) chief architect, Adam Cogan, told the audience at the Australian SharePoint Conference in Sydney that despite many companies being unable to deploy SharePoint without adding extras like comment functions and spam filters, it is still preferred by CEOs and CIOs.
Microsoft: Internet Explorer 9 Set for March 14 Release (Redmond Channel Partner) The release-to-Web version of Internet Explorer 9 is scheduled to become available this Monday, according to Microsoft. In an announcement on Wednesday, Microsoft said IE 9 downloads will be available starting 9 p.m. Pacific Time on March 14. That same day, Microsoft plans to hold a party for developers and designers at 9 p.m. at the Austin City Limits Live in Austin, Texas. Microsoft Tablets Can Learn From Apple, Motorola, Windows Phone 7 (eWeek) Microsoft faces something of a battle royale in the tablet market. Apple’s iPad currently sells millions of units, and its rivals are making aggressive inroads with increasingly powerful Android offerings. Both Research In Motion and Hewlett-Packard are prepping tablets for launch in the next few quarters that will introduce new operating systems into the market, backed by millions of marketing dollars.
Taking Down the Apple and Google Smartphone Duopoly (CNNMoney) If apps were taken out of the equation, would you consider buying a Palm Pre? What about a BlackBerry Torch? Or a Windows Phone? Today, a smartphone is really only as good as the applications that run on it. And despite what Nokia CEO Stephen Elop says, that battle has really become a two-horse race between Apple and Google.
Overthinking Governance Prevents Innovation (ComputerWorld) Minimising overthinking of governance issues when deploying SharePoint is vital if CIOs are to achieve long term innovation, a SharePoint specialist has claimed. Speaking at the 2011 Australian SharePoint conference in Sydney, Seven Sigma’s managing partner, Paul Culmsee, told the predominantly development-focussed audience that if they spend 99 per cent of their time talking about time, cost and scope and 1 per cent looking at the legacy a project will achieve, they will be doomed to repeat the legacy they are trying to escape. “If you spend all your time talking about things from a rational manager’s point of view – it’s a failure,” he said.
Around the Blogosphere SharePoint 2010: Crawl External Content Using Link to Document Content Type (CMSWire) On the first day of SharePoint Best Practices Conference 2011 in La Jolla, CA, I sat in a session by Matthew McDermott entitled "SharePoint Search — Challenges and Tricks". He highlighted the basic overall principles of how SharePoint 2010 search works on the back end and some common pitfalls that can happen in any firm when implementing search. He also presented us with a few handy tricks that can enhance the search results experience in SharePoint 2010. One of those tricks is the usage of the link to document content type in SharePoint 2010 libraries.
Applied SharePoint 2010 Governance Part 3: User Profile Sub-Types (End User SharePoint) Without a doubt the social computing features of SharePoint 2010 have been a huge step forward in the platform. The ability to capture tacit knowledge, promote bottom up innovation, search for experts and improve knowledge sharing are all tangible benefits that all organizations are seeking. The User Profile is a fundamental part of the capabilities that SharePoint 2010 offers around social computing.
A jQuery Primer for SharePoint: Selectors, Attributes, and Traversing – Oh My! (SharePoint Magazine) Welcome back to “a jQuery Primer for SharePoint” here on SharePoint Magazine. It’s time to take a closer look at some examples of using jQuery to locate the correct elements in an HTML page. So what can you do with jQuery in a SharePoint context? I touched upon some of the general things that you can do in my last article, but in this one I thought I’d start to go through the main categories of functionality jQuery gives you, explain what they are, and give you some simple examples to show why they can be useful.
How to get SharePoint 2010 People Search to Work Together with FAST Search 2010 (JOPX on SharePoint 2010, SharePoint 2007 and Windows Phone 7) If you install FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint you will notice that you get some extra service applications – a FAST Query Search Service Application and a FAST Content Search Service Application. Around Bamboo Nation BPC 2011: Final Day - Ask the Experts Panel Business Track (The Bamboo Team Blog) The session got off to a start with a question related to finding the logical starting point for planning a move to SharePoint for a 5 million user Army Medicine Web Site for MedCom. The panel agreed that there may too many unknowns to provide a qualified answer and that a step back to getting clearer requirements was needed. A site that needed frequent updates and complex Content Management may need another solution as SharePoint cannot compete with CMS vendors; however, SharePoint may come into play if a collaboration was needed in the back end for content creation.
