Collaboration Tools Not Delivering Payoff: Fujitsu (IDM)
New research commissioned by Fujitsu UK and Ireland has found that only 40% of IT managers think that collaboration applications drive cost savings and 2 in 5 SharePoint sites are inactive. Whilst there is widespread adoption of collaboration technology there is significant doubt around its ability to enable cost savings and a lack of understanding around how to deploy and measure the use of collaboration tools.

Microsoft's Browser Share Slide Accelerates as IE9 Fails to Hold Users (ComputerWorld)
Internet Explorer's usage share again dipped last month, even as Microsoft's newest browser, IE9, posted record gains, a Web metrics company said today. Total IE share fell by eight-tenths of a percentage point in May -- the third consecutive month that Microsoft's browser slid by that amount or more -- to end at 54.3%, a new low for Microsoft. The eight-tenths of a point drop was nearly double the average decline over the last 12 months, hinting that IE's decay has accelerated.

New Migration Paths to the Microsoft Cloud (Visual Studio Magazine)
Scott Guthrie, the former corporate vice president of the .NET Developer Platform, who's worked on ASP.NET since it was alpha code, will begin the toughest challenge of his career when he assumes control of the Azure Application Platform team, starting this month. The Windows Azure platform will face heightened scrutiny from Microsoft top management after a major reorganization of the company's Server and Tools Business (STB) group and the Developer Division, which is part of the STB. The re-org was announced internally in May.

Stephen Elop's Nokia Adventure (Bloomberg Businessweek)
On a slushy morning in early March, Stephen Elop, a Canadian executive who built his résumé at U.S. technology companies, found himself in front of 2,000 Finns delivering a speech about failure. Six months earlier, Elop had been hired away from Microsoft, where he oversaw the company's Office products, to lead Nokia, the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones. At its peak, in 2002, it contributed 21 percent of all of Finland's corporate tax revenue, and its success over the past dozen years has fueled the nation's sense of possibility in the same way that General Motors once propelled the aspirations of the U.S. Elop's message to his employees in the factory town of Salo was that, despite the 450 million phones the company sold in 2010—402 million more than Apple —almost everything Nokia had done since 2007 was wrong.

Getting Document Thumbnails and PowerPoint Preview for Your Search Results Without Installing FAST for SharePoint (SharePointDevWiki)
Microsoft offers three different flavors of search for SharePoint 2010: Foundation, Standard and Enterprise. For each level upwards you get more features and better search capabilities. One of the visual features included with FAST for SharePoint is Thumbnails and Previews for the search results, as listed on the comparison table below (Compare SharePoint Editions – Search). Wouldn’t it be nice to have this feature on all versions of SharePoint?  I will tell you how, as I demonstrated in a proof of concept talk at Arctic SharePoint Challenge 2011.

MVPs for SharePoint 2010: Debugging Techniques for SharePoint Online Applications (The Microsoft MVP Award Program Blog)
There is a ton of excitement around SharePoint Online, part of Microsoft’s Office 365 offering.  Developing applications in the cloud is really not much different than developing a sandboxed solution. However, when it comes to debugging, we need to think outside-of-the-box a little.  We’ve become a little spoiled by the great new SharePoint developer tools that came with Visual Studio 2010.  We can still use those tools, but unfortunately in the cloud we don’t have the luxury of F5 deployment.  In today’s article we will discuss some of your options for outputting debugging information in the cloud.  If you’re looking for breakpoints, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but hopefully you can leverage some of these techniques when coding your next SharePoint Online application.

Removing Web Parts Tables in SharePoint 2010 (Waldek Mastykarz)
In MOSS 2007 solutions one of the fixes to get cleaner and more accessible HTML markup was to remove Web Part tables using Control Adapters. Microsoft Certified Master - SharePoint 2010, Thoughts and Reflections (Wictor Wilén)
Now with the Microsoft Certified Master course two and a half weeks behind me and the great news that I accomplished all the exams, and might call myself a Microsoft Certified Master for SharePoint 2010, only a few days old I thought I should write something about the program, experience and value of it. Recent blog posts about the Microsoft certification programs also put some extra fuel onto the urge of writing about it.

How to Put an Assessment in Your Office 365 SharePoint Online Public Website (SharePoint & Assessment Blog)
SharePoint Online is part of Microsoft’s cloud-based Office 365 offering which lets you use Office, SharePoint and Exchange all hosted by Microsoft. Included with Office 365 is a basic Public Website capability which is based on SharePoint but doesn’t look like SharePoint at all! It doesn’t support web parts, but has “zones” which you can lay out and edit in a similar way.

Guest Blog by Josh Noble: Pro SharePoint 2010 Search (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Editor's note: The following is an excerpt from the introduction to the new Apress book, Pro SharePoint 2010 Search, by Josh Noble, Robert Piddocke, and Dan Bakmand-Mikalski. The Importance of Quality Findability: If you are reading this book, then most likely your organization has decided to take the leap into SharePoint 2010. Unfortunately, more often than not the platform is selected before anyone determines how it will be used. This leaves a large gap between what the platform is capable of achieving and what is actually delivered to users. The goal of this book is to bridge the gap between what SharePoint can do to connect users with information, and what it does do for your users to connect them with their information.
