Microsoft's Cloud Access Strategy; What You Should Know About iCloud; AT&T CEO Talks Windows Phone 7
It seems that the world is in the clouds today. After the announcement of the iCloud yesterday almost every news story I found this morning was cloud related. Maybe tomorrow the news will have a bit more variety. In a bit more SharePointy (yes, I am allowed to make up words...) news, Bamboo will be at the SharePoint Konferenz 2011 in Vienna, Austria on June 8-9. We have some of our best people attending so be sure to stop by the Bamboo booth with your toughest questions. --Chris
Top News Stories Apple's iCloud: What You Should Know (Business Insider) As I was listening to Apple's WWDC conference today, what ran through my mind the most is if there were ever a time to switch to the world of Apple computing now is it. Today's WWDC keynote presentation was chock-full of new and updated iOS mobile software—too much to cover in this one article. But the most "new thing" coming from Apple this fall is iCloud, a file sharing and streaming service that requires no wired connections. With iCloud and wireless computing, you can use iOS devices—the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch—without having to depend upon a personal computer. In other words, you will be able to download apps, songs, documents and other media, and sync your media between these devices without the use of a single USB cord.
8 Hot Features in Windows 8 (NetworkWorld) Microsoft recently allowed select OEM partners to download updated preview builds of Windows 8. Since then, there have been several leaked images of supposedly new features that you might see in the next version of Windows when it launches (perhaps in early 2012). And Microsoft showed off some features in a preview last week. Here we have compiled the most interesting ones.
Microsoft's Cloud Access Strategy: Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10 & Windows Phone 7 Mango (CMSWire) Microsoft has made 2011 the year it really pushes its cloud services, under the banner of “Cloud Power.” Its Windows Azure platform is being used by the likes of NASA and Xerox to build a wide range of bespoke cloud applications. Office 365, due to leave beta later this year, is Microsoft's cloud based productivity suite for businesses of all sizes. Add in its Hyper-V technology for private cloud environments, and Microsoft seems to have a pretty coherent strategy for powering “the cloud.” But what about the other side of the cloud proposition — accessing these services as consumers? What about the hardware and software end users need to get at, and make the most of, the cloud?
Dragons in the Cloud: Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft (ZDNet) Today, at their World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) Apple Inc. announced the upcoming availability of iCloud, a new free service that allows users to synchronize media content and other forms of personal data across all of their devices, be it their iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches, Macs, or even PCs running iTunes. With iCloud and iOS 5, Apple has now “cut the cord” with its iTunes dependency for its various iOS-based consumer devices and will allow users to synchronize their music collection wirelessly.
AT&T CEO Dishes On Windows Phone 7 (InformationWeek) In a candid interview with AllThingsD's Ina Fried, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega shared some interesting gems about how the company looks at its competing smartphone platforms, and Windows Phone 7 in particular. de la Vega joins other executives in bad-mouthing sales of Microsoft's smartphone platform. An LG exec earlier this year bemoaned the slow sales of WP7 smartphones. de la Vega's comments aren't all that surprising, especially since Microsoft hasn't released firm numbers about WP7 sales.
Around the Blogosphere Upgrading and Fixing Email Enabled Lists in SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land) Kelly Gibson, our engineer was working on Upgrade this last weekend and found that email enabled lists stopped working. He had already updated SMTP and the MX record and so forth to ensure it was pointing to the correct box. What he was noticing was SharePoint was losing track of the email enabled lists. Email was coming in right, but wasn't configured correctly. In the troubleshooting steps they found that if they un enabled the list for email and then re-enabled it, it would work. 400 lists and hours and hours later this batch in the upgrade was done.
SharePoint Talks: Eric Shupps (Social-Point) In this video, SharePoint Server MVP Eric Shupps and I talk about having a plan for “Day 2″. In other words – it is equally important to have a plan to monitor and manage growth as it is to deploy SharePoint in the first place. Having a defined “Managed Service” for SharePoint defined inside of your business is a “must-have” in advance of its roll-out. Weather you provide these services internally or outsource them – have a plan! We also spend some time talking about the greater SharePoint Community and the benefit it can be.
MVPs for SharePoint 2010: Office 365: SharePoint Online & Instant Extranets (The Microsoft MVP Award Program Blog) SharePoint Online comes with several amazing features and here I’ll cover SharePoint’s Extranet feature. Office 365 and SharePoint Online now allows companies to truly collaborate with external users who are not apart the organization. SharePoint Online enterprise customers can create instant extranets with none of the major cost considerations associated with traditional on premise solutions (hardware, security and consulting). The extranet capabilities built into SharePoint Online will save your company money, that’s the bottom line here. SharePoint Online makes it simple to collaborate and share.
How Microsoft IT Does Business Intelligence: Microsoft IT & CIO Office Scorecards (To the SharePoint) Whether you are starting a new BI effort or updating existing processes, it is always helpful to see how other companies implement their Business Intelligence solutions. In the Microsoft IT Showcase video, Microsoft IT CIO Office Scorecards – Delivering Dashboards from KPI Catalog to the Masses, Microsoft IT demonstrate how it manages and delivers scorecards to the masses at Microsoft. Joshua explained that the live broadcast of the presentation was made possible via the Office Web Apps, which allow users to view and edit Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote documents directly in the browser, noting that "If someone has a license for Office, they have a license for Office Web Apps.
