I was rather disappointed to wake up and find that Windows 8 wasn't magically installed on my computer. Major fail Microsoft... - Dooley

Six Ways to Use SharePoint as a Learning Platform
Microsoft has an interesting history with education and SharePoint. But there’s never been a complete offering out of the box that education institutions could take advantage of. Does that mean you shouldn’t consider SharePoint for education services? Not at all. Here are six education features you can implement in your SharePoint environment.
Microsoft's Wave of Office, Server Product Releases Brings Flood of Questions (CIO)
Microsoft recently, and unexpectedly, released to manufacturing the 2013 wave of almost all of its collaboration and productivity products. Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync and its cloud productivity suite Office 365 version 2013 were all released on Oct. 11, 2012, prompting many development team members to finally pronounce publicly that they had been targeting "10/11/12 for 2013" for a long time.
Microsoft Finally Brings Hadoop Big Data To Windows Azure (TechWeek)
As Microsoft undertakes the final preparations for the glitzy Windows 8 launch on Friday, it made another important announcement for enterprises by offering a way for Windows users to utilise Hadoop-based big data thanks to a partnership with Hortonworks. Apache Hadoop is of course the popular open-source storage and data analysis framework, and Microsoft has long been working on integrating it within the Windows environment. Last October for example it revealed its plans for tackling big data within the enterprise, saying it would include an Apache Hadoop-based distribution for Windows Server and Windows Azure.
How to Upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 8 (CNET)
The mosaic-like Windows 8 is a dramatic shift for Microsoft as it embraces the tablet and touchscreen era, creating a standard experience across phones, tablets, laptops and desktops. Eight months after the preview was made available, the genuine article is now sitting on Microsoft's servers, waiting for you to download it.
You're Good to Go! Office 2013's Chatty New Personality (Bit)
A feature of Office 2013 that makes me want to barf is the tone of the language used in the messages, tooltips and so forth. Many of these messages have become rather more “chatty”, as though the software wants to be your friend, while in other places it refers to itself in the plural as though it were royalty. Try putting on your best Queen Victoria voice and saying: “We can’t find anything to display here”, which is what Outlook says every time you open an empty folder.
Microsoft Will Ship a Preview of Office 2013 RT With the Surface Tablet (The Inquirer)
SOFTWARE COBBLER Microsoft is shipping the Preview release of its Office Home & Student 2013 RT software suite with the Surface tablet, meaning that customers will have to wait "a few days" before the software automatically updates to the full version. Despite originally having been led to believe the final version would come preinstalled when the Surface is released, communications lead for Microsoft's Office division Oliver Roll said in a blog post on Tuesday that the Surface tablet, like all Windows RT devices, "comes with the preview release of Office Home & Student 2013 RT preinstalled".
Three Days in the Life of a Once and Former Microsoft Surface RT User (ZDNet)
I predict that the scenario I'm about to present here will happen over and over and over again. This is not going to be pretty. Let's follow a typical consumer, Kevin, as he goes to buy a Microsoft Surface RT. Last week, Sean Hollister of The Verge called a bunch of Microsoft Stores and spoke to representatives. The dialog I'm going to use for the store reps comes from real representatives who gave Sean these (very wrong) answers. Special kudos go out to Sean for doing this research.

Introduction to Hover Panel in Search 2013 (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Hi everyone—my name is Patrick Quinn, and I'm a Program Manager working on the SharePoint search user experience. I'd like to introduce you to one of the most exciting new Search user interface features in SharePoint Server 2013. Introducing… …our new hover panel! When we designed the UI for this release, we focused primarily on making sure each result is quick and easy to find and read, while still displaying as much relevant information as possible to the end user. But, these two concepts are often in conflict with each other—the more information you add to a result, the more "cluttered" the UI looks. The more "cluttered" the UI, the harder it is to scan. There needs to be a balance between the quantity of information and the organization of that information.
New “SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint 2010 Claims Encoding” Topic in the TechNet Wiki (SharePoint IT Pro Blog)
The SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint 2010 claims encoding topic is now available. Have you ever wondered what “i:0#.w|contoso\chris” (or something like it) meant in the display of user sign-in information on a SharePoint site or in Unified Logging Service (ULS) log files? Well, wonder no longer. This topic describes the syntax and encoding of these claims for both SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint 2010 Products, along with multiple examples.
Setting up a SharePoint 2013 Development Environment 101 (Bill Baer)
Preparation of your development environment is determined by the apps you will develop and the systems you have access to. If you want to distribute apps for SharePoint through an app catalog, such as apps for SharePoint will full control permissions, a local installation of SharePoint 2013 is required; otherwise an Office 365 Development Site can be used.
Using Copy-SPSite to Rename Site Collections in SharePoint 2013 (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
As a SharePoint consultant I get asked all the time if there’s a way to rename (really repath) site collections. As SharePoint installations age, information architecture issues creep in. One of the ways this happens is that URL paths that were once correct no longer are. If the erroneous path is a web’s path, that’s easy enough to fix. You can use “stsadm –o renameweb” or Site Actions > Site Settings > Title, Description, and Logo. If you need to repath a site collection, well, that gets a little hairier. Okay, a lot hairier. There’s no way easy way to do it with out of the box tools. Before you say, “But, but, what about ‘stsadm –o rename’?” keep in mind that only works with hostname based site collections, and most site collections are path based. Yours are, I checked.
SharePoint 2013 - Search Logical Architecture (ITPro)
Search is one of the big bets in SharePoint 2013. Search is new, search is different from all previous versions of SharePoint. The platform has been consolidated. It is a combination of FAST Search and SharePoint Search components. And also the good news is, it is the same from Foundation to Server. No more different flavors.
Microsoft Goes Back to School and Gets Smart with SharePoint 2013 (SharePointEduTech)
Sometimes Microsoft gets a good idea and then doesn’t follow through on it. This is the case with SharePoint and support for education. There’s a long history here, and Microsoft appeared to drop a major opportunity. But SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 may just change that.

Announcing the Release of List Bulk Import 2.5 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
With the introduction of an enterprise-wide platform such as SharePoint to an organization, it takes users time to adapt to their new environment, and to get used to new ways of accomplishing their daily tasks. Providing them with ready access to their existing data in SharePoint soon after implementation helps allow end users to get up and running quickly and easily. List Bulk Import allows you to focus on designing the best way to use SharePoint for your business rather than worrying about migrating your existing data to the new platform.

Extending SharePoint Lists Without InfoPath: Introducing a Series on Bamboo Custom Columns (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As solutions using SharePoint continue to expand, the need to go beyond the basic columns provided by SharePoint out-of-the-box expands as well. SharePoint provides a powerful integration point between SharePoint List Forms and the form designer program, InfoPath. InfoPath is an extremely powerful tool itself, but at the same time, it can also be overwhelming. That is where Bamboo Custom Columns come in. Using Bamboo Custom Columns, users exponentially expand their column-related functionality options. Click the header link below for each column to read its dedicated post in the series:
