The 64-bit edition of Windows Vista continues to gain in market share. However, some are questioning whether it’s really an important issue for consumers, or if it might even cause more problems than it solves. The latest figures come from Microsoft’s Mike Nash, a senior figure in the Windows division. Speaking about recently-released figures on driver compatibility problems, he told BetaNews that around 20% of Vista computers sold in the US in September ran the 64-bit edition.

Just wanted to pass on a solution to a problem that I ran into today in case anyone else runs into it. So today I had a customer who was simply trying to access their SharePoint Usage reports . Unfortunately when they were going into site settings and selecting the link they were receiving a 403 forbidden error.. So the first thing i checked was that the application pool account had the correct rights in SQL server (dbcreator and security admin) on the content databases in which I was accessing.

I see four levels of JavaScript problem-solving. Your approach will depend on some of the factors we discussed in part 1. If we agree that JavaScript is a hammer (a very useful tool in many but not all situations), we must also determine at which strength to employ our hammer. One of the topics I addressed was striving for the smallest page payload for requested pages. The page payload is the combined total size of all files required for a page request which includes all HTML markup, images, JavaScript, CSS and other assets on referenced in the markup. The best way to address the page payload is doing what you can to make all the files as small as you possibly can including doing things such as implementing a CSS-based (pixel perfect) design instead of one that is table-based.

I am often asked by Human Resource folks about “obscene content” in a SharePoint environment. However the content gets in, they don’t want it to be found. There are utilities like Forefront that will perform content filtering for SharePoint, but most fall short of filtering “everything”. For example, Forefront only filters documents, not list items, publishing pages, content editor web parts, or profile properties.

Customizing Search Series - Creating the Custom Results Page (SharePoint Magazine)
This is the fifth article within the Customizing Search Series. This article continues to build out the customization of search using a new content source based on the BDC. When we previously setup a custom scope, we left the target search page as the default. Now, we will create a new search results page for the client scope which will then be used to customize the actual rendering of the search results.

SPDisposeCheck tool for SharePoint Developers (Shared Points for SharePoint...)
SPDisposeCheck is a tool for analyzing your code and discover SPWeb objects that haven’t been properly disposed. I have been using it for a while and it has been very useful. Understanding Calendar Columns in a SharePoint List Calendar View (SharePoint Solutions Blog)
Last week, one of my students asked me about the Calendar Columns when creating a Calendar View on a SharePoint list. In the particular exercise we were doing, all the columns were set exactly the same. Although this was a good choice for the task at hand, it didn't demonstrate how the different options show up differently in the monthly, weekly, and daily views. To understand this, you really need to see it with screenshots, so here is an example.

Should You Really Demo SharePoint by Installing (Only) Search Server 2008 Express? (Mike Walsh's WSS and more)
Search Server 2008 Express is based on SharePoint v3 but to take that fact and draw the conclusion that you should use it when you are showing a company what it is possible to do with SharePoint is in my opinion taking things way too far. The reason for me even mentioning this is that I saw a couple of days ago a blog item from someone who claimed that they had abandoned using WSS 3.0 for proof-of-concepts at prospective SharePoint users but nowadays always used Search Server 2008 Express.

Editing Columns in a SharePoint Document Library Redux (SharePoint Blank)
One of the unanticipated effects of Mark Miller's recent (and much appreciated) plugging of SharePoint Blank over in EndUser SharePoint has been the sharp uptick in the number of questions that I've been fielding in the comments section of older blog entries. Unfortunately, quite a few of these questions rolled in over the past few days while I was, far more unfortunately, out of the office due to a death in the family. I'm honored to be asked these types of questions, especially since there's an implied assumption that I might actually know the answers. Sometimes I do know the answers, but I'm a card-carrying end user whose SharePoint learning is a day-to-day process, so I generally don't know the answer off the top of my head. I am, however, more than happy to seek out the answer for you, and the fact that doing so also increases my own SharePoint knowledge is the icing on the cake. Thus, I'll be dedicating the next few days to playing catch-up on my backlog of questions, diligently researching the questions and, to the best of my ability, documenting my findings here.
