One of the topics I addressed was striving for the smallest page payload for requested pages. The page payload is the combined total size of all files required for a page request which includes all HTML markup, images, JavaScript, CSS and other assets on referenced in the markup. The best way to address the page payload is doing what you can to make all the files as small as you possibly can including doing things such as implementing a CSS-based (pixel perfect) design instead of one that is table-based.

There are utilities like Forefront that will perform content filtering for SharePoint, but most fall short of filtering “everything”. For example, Forefront only filters documents, not list items, publishing pages, content editor web parts, or profile properties.

With this latest edition, we recognize that SharePoint has moved beyond a simple product, and beyond even a platform, to become a vibrant but often beguiling ecosystem of 3rd-party suppliers, consultancies, and integrators. In the report, we evaluate twenty-two SharePoint software partners. The latest edition also identifies best practices for enterprise architectures and governance.

Early this morning, Microsoft formally unveiled the major deliverables for what has been called Windows Live Wave 3. Microsoft is building on principles first articulated in 2005. In Washington, D.C., I remember meeting several MSN product managers who laid out a simple but profound approach: Connect people to whom they know. Recognizing that most blogs and photo shares wouldn't be seen by most people, Microsoft started building infrastructure that would extend relationships. The vast Internet might not care about your blog, but your friends or family certainly might.

In the particular exercise we were doing, all the columns were set exactly the same. Although this was a good choice for the task at hand, it didn't demonstrate how the different options show up differently in the monthly, weekly, and daily views. To understand this, you really need to see it with screenshots, so here is an example.

The reason for me even mentioning this is that I saw a couple of days ago a blog item from someone who claimed that they had abandoned using WSS 3.0 for proof-of-concepts at prospective SharePoint users but nowadays always used Search Server 2008 Express.

However, it may be overkill for a lot of companies and isn't quite as easy to manage as it first appears.

How Microsoft Aims to Remain Dominant (BNET)
Despite the marked shift to Web software, Microsoft remains a dominant technology company and one of the biggest, most profitable firms in the world. The firm just made some of its first significant product direction announcements since Bill Gates officially left in late June. Who better to ask about the company than Mary Jo Foley, who has followed the company for the better part of 25 years, and this year published “Microsoft 2.0: How Microsoft Plans to Stay Relevant in the Post-Gates Era”

But for the software giant, beating Google isn't just a matter of pride, it's about survival. So with consumers picking Google's search technologies over Microsoft by a factor of 6 to 1, Microsoft has only one choice: It must outspend Google in a bid to regain lost share.

These are well-known Windows experts such as Jeremy Moskowitz, creator of PolicyPak, and well-respected journalists such as Greg Shields, who is taking aim at InfoWorld's "patently biased" Windows 7 compatibility calculator this week in his Realtime Community blog.

In overall look and feel, it mimics Vista, although there are enough changes to make it far more than just a juiced-up service pack.

Many SharePoint API's allocate COM based memory that is not released by CLR garbage collection and must be released by calling the Dispose() methods. Microsoft Guidance for when to call SPSite and SPWeb Dispose() methods have been published in this MSDN whitepaper by Mike Ammerlaan and Scott Harris. In addition, Roger Lamb has provided additional detail and discussion on his MSDN SharePoint Developer blog. This guidance applies only to customers building custom software that they compiled to .NET assemblies that make use of SharePoint API calls. Also, an update to the MSDN whitepaper is being planned to reflect key guidance from the blogs.
