Office 365 has accounted for about 25% of all Office retail unit sales in the U.S. since its introduction two months ago, but the new "rent-not-own" strategy has not boosted overall sales, an analyst said today. Stephen Baker of the NPD Group, a research firm that regularly surveys U.S. retailers for software sales figures, noted that the split between Office 2013 and Office 365 is running about 3:1 so far, in the former's favor.

Internet Explorer 10 (IE10), the newest version of Microsoft's longstanding Web browser, surged to 86.6% month-over-month growth in March, according to the latest figures from Net Applications. The uptick coincides with the general availability of IE10 for Windows 7, the world's most popular operating system. Redmond's latest browser, which has generally drawn praise, was initially available only for Windows 8.

In September 2011, Microsoft declared that browser plug-ins are a relic from the Internet's early days, calling them bad for battery life, security, reliability, and privacy, and said that it would ban them when IE10 was running with Windows 8's Metro user interface, now called the "immersive UI."

Wave one, which will be aligned with Windows Blue, will be updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, which should be out this fall, I am hearing.

Shocking developments in the mobile enterprise race show the market's incredible volatility, according to a new survey by Aberdeen Group. The survey looked at mobile app deployment plans by platform--Apple iOS, Android, Windows 8/Windows Phone and BlackBerry--covering both tablets and phones. "The plans for mobile app deployment in 2013 were a big surprise," says Aberdeen research director Andrew Borg. Aberdeen plans to release its official findings next week, but gave CIO.com a sneak peek.

Convention Over Configuration with MVC and Autofac (Fear and Loathing)
One of the key things to wrap your head around when doing good software development using frameworks like ASP.NET MVC is the idea of convention over configuration (or coding by convention). The idea is that rather than messing around with configuration files about where to find things, how to register IoC containers, etc. that we used to do, you follow a convention, a way of doing things. The example normally expressed is a class in your model called “Sale” and a database named “Sales”. If you don’t do anything that’s how the system will work but if you decide to change the name of the database to “Products_Sold” then you need some kind of configuration to tell the system how to find the backend database. Otherwise it can naturally find it based on the naming strategy of your domain.

My Experience Migrating to Office 365 (Andrew Connell)
While it isn't exactly spring yet, but it sure feels like it where I'm from. I live in north-east Florida where it is usually much colder in January & February (30F's-50F's) than we are seeing now (50F's-80F's). As such, it feels like spring to me so my spring cleaning kicked in. This year I have embarked on two big personal projects. The first one, migrating my blog & site from the seemingly dead SubText engine to the open source OrchardCMS platform and host it on Windows Azure (currently working on this and I’ll have a whole series of posts on it once it’s done). The other one is what I wanted to touch on in this post: migrating as much stuff as I could to Office 365.

Recently I have experienced a moment of Oops at a customer where they have SharePoint and too little knowledge how to set up and maintain a good environment.

How to: Sort Search Queries in SharePoint 2013 (Dot Net Mafia)
Sorting search results has always been an interesting subject in SharePoint. It was actually harder to do than you would think. In SharePoint 2007, all you had was relevance and modified date (write). The KeywordQuery class did not have anything to allow you to sort. You could get around this though by using SQL Syntax though but it was not ideal. As a reminder, you should stop using SQL Syntax now. In SharePoint 2010, Microsoft added a SortList property to the KeywordQuery class however, if you tried to use it, you would likely get the error: Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040E60. This is because, code was added to prevent SharePoint 2010 to sort on anything but relevance and modified date. The only way to get sortable search results was to add FAST Search for SharePoint (FS4SP). That was unfortunate as many people wanted to sort but did not want to make that kind of investment.

Copying a List using Export/Import-SPWeb and SharePoint Designer (From The Field)
Sometimes it’s the simple solutions that are the best. I was recently asked if Export/Import-SPWeb could be used to create a copy of a list within a site in SharePoint 2010, the reason for doing this was to take one large list and split it into two smaller lists - easy I thought! However taking a look at the syntax for Import-SPWeb - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607613(v=office.14) it’s not actually possible to rename a list on import. By default if a list exists at the same URL it will be overwritten/merged on import depending on settings used with the UpdateVersions parameter.

Every provider of electronic medical records (EMR) systems has or is developing an iPad app for these records systems, which are the equivalent of ERP for the medical industry and in full deployment now thanks to federal mandates. It seems inevitable the iPad will become the device of choice for computers in the classroom and computers in the clinic.

This tripped me up a few months back. After figuring it out I added a reminder and jotted down a few notes with the intention of blogging it later. I never got around to it but recently noticed a few people asking this question on a discussion list I’m on, so it bubbled to the top of the priority list. Here’s the problem: When you add a lookup field to a list in SharePoint, you can’t filter by the name of the item in the lookup column when using the REST API. The reason is simple: the value isn’t exposed the way you might expect it.

This allows the user to pick from a list of properties. I’ll cover it in the future because it deserves a quick post. However, for you developers out there, I know that some of you will want to write some code that passes a sort order. This post explains how to do it.

I've documented a few times how I feel Microsoft is attempting to control end-user behavior – from killing the Start button in Windows 8 to blocking used games from working on the Xbox 360 successor – and from what I've read about the end-user license agreement (EULA) for Office 2013, the trend is continuing. The retail license agreement for Office 2013 locks it to the PC on which you install it forever. If you buy a new PC, you can't reinstall Office 2013. The same applies when reinstalling Windows. If you have to reinstall Windows for whatever reason, that Office 2013 DVD is now a drink coaster.

Windows Azure Restored Following Global Outage from Expired SSL Certificate (RedmondMag)
Microsoft’s Windows Azure storage was back online Saturday after an expired SSL certificate left customers unable to access their data. The cloud service went down Friday afternoon when the SSL certificate expired and remained unavailable until Saturday morning. The worldwide outage affected HTTPS traffic accessing storage, though did not impact less secure HTTP traffic, the company confirmed on the Windows Azure Dashboard.

First, BCS models can be scoped to apps for SharePoint. Second, connection information is defined and stored separately from the app-scoped BCS model in BCS connections.

No Metadata? No Problem! Custom Entity Extraction in SharePoint 2013 (Dot Net Mafia)
Every organization wants better search results. However, few have actually spent the time to create file plans, content types, and managed properties to make it happen. SharePoint 2013 has a feature called entity extraction though that can actually infer values by comparing what it finds in the body of the document to a dictionary. This feature is Entity Extraction. If you are familiar with FAST Search for SharePoint or FAST ESP, you know that entity extraction is nothing new. What it does is gives you the power to infer the values of managed properties in search without having metadata in your site columns. FS4SP and SharePoint 2013 come with an extraction dictionaries for company names out-of-the-box. This means when it crawls it will search the contents of the body of your documents and if it recognizes any companies it knows, you can then search and refine on it. However, the true value comes when you create your own. SharePoint 2013 makes it really easy to create these custom dictionaries.

Survey: Many Organizations Remain on SharePoint 2003, 2007 (Fierce Content Management)
A survey conducted by Metalogix at the SharePoint Conference in November has found that of the 100 administrators who were surveyed, most reported that they were using older versions of SharePoint. The survey found that of the companies surveyed, approximately 40 percent were still on SharePoint 2003 or 2007, while 90 percent were overseeing at least one SharePoint farm running SharePoint 2010. Just 10 percent were running Office 365 in the cloud. If you're wondering why it adds up over 100 percent, the respondents were big companies, often running multiple SharePoint farms.

Looking back at my analytics, I found that my People Search in SharePoint 2010 was quite popular. I thought I would update that post for SharePoint 2013. The process is similar but there are a few things to be aware of. People Search requires you to have the User Profile Service Application up and running as well as My Sites. If you don’t have either of those configured, People Search will not work and you will likely see an error like the following in your crawl log.

Nasuni is a closely-held supplier of turnkey data protection appliances that use public Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers' object storage repositories as backup and recovery targets. While Nasuni officials said they conducted more exhaustive tests for the shootout, such as by benchmarking a wider range of file sizes (from 1KB to 1GB), the company only compared five preferred IaaS providers -- Amazon, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Rackspace -- compared with 16 last year.

Windows 8 is a computer science masterpiece trapped inside a user interface kerfuffle. Microsoft’s new operating system for phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and servers brims with innovative technologies, bold ideas, and visual elegance. The system’s radical new interface, called Modern, is a pleasure to use on phones and tablets. And although that interface fares poorly on today’s larger desktop computer screens, Windows 8 probably won’t damage the company’s standing in corporate America. It might even shore up its eroding presence on residential desktops and laptops by offering a user experience that’s new, fun, and different from anything offered by Apple and Google. Indeed, that’s my only real criticism of Windows 8: the touch-based user interface is clearly designed for consuming information and having fun, rather than for doing serious work.

Microsoft might be selling two versions of its Office suite, but its licensing policies suggest the company is not only trying to thwart software piracy, but also drive customers away from Office 2013 and over to the Office 365 subscription model. First, a little background. Purchasing Office 2013 only provides a license for a single PC (as opposed to up to five PCs with Office 365). The Office 2013 license goes one step further into the draconian abyss, though, by specifying that the software is literally tied to the device it’s installed on. This means you can’t re-install Office 2013 if you get a new PC.

Even before Windows 8 launched, analysts were skeptical about the new OS's prospects in the enterprise. Since then, the re-imagined version of Microsoft's flagship product has posted a mixed record that compares modestly to the debut of its wildly popular predecessor, Windows 7. The upgrade has been available for less than four months, so Windows 8's fate is far from written, especially with the Surface Pro just becoming available and more powerful Ultrabooks on the way. Even so, trends suggest that businesses will continue to wait on Windows 8, and that Microsoft might have to wait until Windows 9 to reassert its enterprise status.

Microsoft founder and chairman Bill Gates has admitted the obvious: Microsoft's beginning strategy for mobile phones was a failure. When asked why it failed, he had this to say: "That's too complicated." Gates said that during an interview with Charlie Rose for CBS This Morning and 60 Minutes. In the interview, he also said that Microsoft under Steve Ballmer's leadership has not created enough technological "breakthroughs," although he also lauded Ballmer's efforts.

Microsoft's Outlook.com Gains 60 Million Users in Six Months (ZDNet)
As Microsoft continues its attempts to lure users away from Gmail, the firm says that after releasing Internet-based Outlook.com as a preview, millions of people have signed up to the service. The Redmond giant announced on its blog that it was "humbled" by active users of the email service -- which has grown from none to 60 million users in a six-month span.

How Request Management Works in SharePoint 2013 (ACS Blogs)
Spence Harbar has a great 3-part blog here on how to configure request management. It however does not go into the deep level of what is occurring in the code. This blog will take you a bit deeper into how Request Management works. What is Request Management? It is a Reverse Proxy implemented in SharePoint 2013. It is defined by the SPRoutingReverseProxy class. As Spence points out, Request Management is implemented in the Http Module of SharePoint (Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationRuntime.SPRequestModule). Internally it works like this:

For the past four months, I've spent a lot of time focused on conversations and communities. I have a client in the early adopter program for SharePoint 2013 and we've been piloting a replacement for their current listservs with SharePoint 2013 community sites. As Microsoft's Richard Riley told me at the SharePoint Conference in November, when it comes to different ways to have a conversation, SharePoint 2013 offers an "embarrassment of riches." While true and in many ways really interesting, I think the myriad of choices for conversations when it comes to SharePoint 2013 might make things more confusing for users, especially those who are struggling with "social." Unfortunately that’s how it went with the December 2012 Hotfix for SharePoint 2013. After you install this patch on SharePoint Server 2013 users can no longer create MySites. Existing MySites still work, but no more can be created. When users try to create a MySite you’ll find an error like this in your ULS logs:

I joined Twitter in August of 2010; however I didn't really start actively tweeting until summer of 2011. I started my blog in August of 2011, and I posted my first article to NothingButSharePoint.com in December of the same year, just over a year ago. How to: Use the SharePoint 2013 Search KeywordQuery Class (Dot Net Mafia)
Over the past few versions of SharePoint, I have provided a number of blog posts on how to query search. Of those, my posts on how to use the KeywordQuery class using KQL are some of the most popular (2010 and 2007). In continuing that tradition, I am proud to present the “How to” post on using the KeywordQuery class in SharePoint 2013. The good news: your old KeywordQuery code should still work. The bad news: the way you did it is marked completely obsolete. I actually had to dig through quite a bit of documentation to find the right API that wasn’t obsolete. One thing that always provided confusion was that there were similar classes named KeywordQuery in both Microsoft.Search.Query and Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query. To reduce some of that confusion, the KeywordQuery class in Microsoft.Search.Query is now marked as obsolete. The new updated class is in Microsoft.Office.Search.Query. Microsoft may have killed the word Office from the name of the product in 2010, but it’s alive and well in the API.

As I look back across my world in 2012, I see a nice sized list of SharePoint achievements that make me proud, but I also see a list of accomplishments that absolutely required development resources. As one of the most frequently used tools in SharePoint, keyword search is a critical function that should be immediately enabled as a best practice. In this article, I will walk you through the process required to configure keyword searches in SharePoint 2013, as well as teach you how to apply this function to Bamboo Solutions' List Search Simple Web Part. To search for a keyword on a site, you must first activate Search Services on the Central Administration page. Since SharePoint does not activate Search Services automatically, you will need to activate it manually. What We Know About Office 2013 So Far (RedmondMag)
The "next" Microsoft Office will arrive for sale to the general public sometime in the first quarter of this year, according to Microsoft's estimate, but much is already known. For instance, Microsoft's volume licensing customers already have access to the next Office as some of the products were made available to them in late October. In addition, Microsoft's pricing details for volume licensing customers were released in December. There's a clunky way to access those prices via the Microsoft License Advisor portal here, but not all of the products (which are known as "SKUs") are available yet.

Over the past few versions of SharePoint, I have provided a number of blog posts on how to query search. Of those, my posts on how to use the KeywordQuery class using KQL are some of the most popular (2010 and 2007). In continuing that tradition, I am proud to present the “How to” post on using the KeywordQuery class in SharePoint 2013. The good news: your old KeywordQuery code should still work. The bad news: the way you did it is marked completely obsolete. I actually had to dig through quite a bit of documentation to find the right API that wasn’t obsolete. One thing that always provided confusion was that there were similar classes named KeywordQuery in both Microsoft.Search.Query and Microsoft.Office.Server.Query. To reduce some of that confusion, the KeywordQuery class in Microsoft.Search.Query is now marked as obsolete. The new updated class is in Microsoft.Office.Search.Query. Microsoft may have killed the word Office from the name of the product in 2010, but it’s alive and well in the API.

As expected, Microsoft is pricing its next-generation Office 2013 line-up in a way to try to convince users to pay an annual subscription fee -- with multiple-device-installation rights as a carrot -- instead of buying the Office 2013 software outright. In a recent survey of 2,000 CIOs, a Gartner report revealed that the execs' top tech priorities for 2013 include cloud computing in general, as well as its specific types: software as a service (SaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and platform as a service (PaaS). No surprise there. Of course, every year since 2008 has been deemed the "year of the cloud." Yes, small cloud projects exist and Amazon Web Services did not get to be a billion-dollar company due to a lack of interest. However, the adoption has been slow if steady. It isn't exploding, as everyone has predicted for each year.

Yesterday I posted how to add forms to your SharePoint 2013 style workflows. That post came from a project I’m doing for someone. One of the more significant changes to workflow in SharePoint 2013 is that you don’t use server side code on the SharePoint box… custom logic is implemented using expressions or by calling a remote web service. With a form, you have to use JavaScript to capture all the values and submit them to the workflow instance using the workflow API in the client side object model (CSOM).

Content By Search in SharePoint 2013: Content By Search, also known as Cross-Site Publishing (XSP), is the new publishing model introduced with SharePoint 2013. In previous versions of SharePoint the physical location of the content determined how it would be published. Although it is still possible in SharePoint 2013 to use the traditional publishing model, the newest version of SharePoint allows us to leverage SharePoint Search for publishing content.

What is Permissions Inheritance? (Microsoft)
Permissions inheritance allows you to make a permission assignment once, and have that permission apply to all sites, lists, libraries, folders and items that inherit permissions. This default behavior can reduce complexity and the amount of time Administrators and Site Owners spend on security management. By default, SharePoint sites inherit permissions from a parent site. This means that when you assign a user to the Members group, the user’s permissions automatically cascade down through all the sites, lists, libraries, folders and items that inherit the permission level.
