Early year, make or break will be one of perception, whether or not customers and shareholders see the glass as half full or half empty. From the half-full perspective, Microsoft has bet big on the cloud, and at the right time. From the half-empty viewpoint, Microsoft muffed mobile, by first fumbling smartphones and later tablets. The company started pushing the latter category a decade ago, only to lose it to Apple during 2010.

Microsoft to Show Off True iPad Competitors at CES? (ZDNet)
The New York Times is reporting that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer may show off some new slates and tablets from various PC partners at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011 in January. Sounds like CES 2010 revisited, doesn’t it? Last year, the centerpiece of Ballmer’s keynote was an HP slate prototype (that ultimately emerged as a very different looking HP Slate 500 product aimed at business users).

Commenters Say Don’t Knock Windows Phone 7 Prematurely (Forbes)
Windows Phone 7 has battled a lot of skepticism in its short life. But the mobile operating system, which is a revamp of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software, also has a band of enthusiastic supporters, as I found when I wrote about WP7 last week. My earlier post focused on an iPhone user who had given WP7 a test run of a few weeks. The user, who remains anonymous, ultimately concluded that he preferred the iPhone and returned to it. Afterwards, he sent me a detailed list of ways he thought Microsoft could improve WP7, particularly in regards to its user interface.

But it's likely all for naught. Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt's objective of making Chrome OS a "viable third choice" in operating systems looks doomed.

Gartner Says Cloud is Over Hyped (ITPro)
Cloud computing could be over hyped today, but more than half of large enterprises will rely on public clouds by 2015. According to Gartner, the industry analysts, cloud computing is currently still at the "peak of inflated expectations", with users' belief in the technology outstripping its ability to deliver. But within the next five years, half of the world's 1000 largest enterprises will be using external cloud services for their "top 10 revenue generating processes," Gartner said in its predictions for cloud for 2011, Gartner Predicts 2011: Cloud Computing.

AdShuffle.com is a legitimate company selling ads to various ad networks, including DoubleClick and MSN. AdShufffle.com—three fs—is not, but it looks close enough to AdShuffle.com that the networks were tricked. These banner ads attempted to use a range of exploits (two Internet Explorer, one Java, and four Adobe Reader flaws—all which are currently patched), to install the HDD Plus malware. HDD Plus is bogus disk diagnostic software; it warns of impending failures, and says that to avoid trouble you should buy the full version.

Owen Allen, former Microsoft SharePoint ISV Partner Manager, sent a tweet about it which I responded and asked: "What does Santa's SharePoint governance + adoption plan look like?"

I needed to quickly write a script that would return all the tasks currently assigned to me. I also wanted it to return any task that was assigned to a group I belong to. This can actually be done with a CAML query, so no big deal, right? The rub is that the “assigned to” field is a multi-select person or group field. As far as I know (and I actually know so little) you cannot just write a CAML query to return this information. If you can, please leave a comment below and disregard the rest of this blog post…

As such, I decided to write an article that he could reference when he wanted to give his users the main reasons, using non-technical language, why content types make sense. You are likely reading this for one of two reasons. One is that you know why SharePoint content types are the coolest things since, well, temperature, and you need to convince someone that you are not completely bonkers.

SPDisposeCheck is a tool that helps developers and administrators check custom SharePoint solutions that use the SharePoint Object Model helping measure against known Microsoft dispose best practices. This tool may not show all memory leaks in your code and may produce false positives which need further review by subject matter experts.

With list filters such as these, you can easily provide end users with a simple system to temporarily and non-destructively adjust the way Web Parts consume data.
