Users who have downloaded the leaked version of Office 2010 Technical Preview, or the official release from Microsoft, made available at the start of this week, are already familiar with Send-a-Smile. This because of the inherent pop-up that jumps out of the Notifications area as soon as the install is complete. Send-a-Smile is the feedback tool that accompanies the technical Preview of Office 2010 by default. The utility is designed to allow testers of the next iteration of the Office System to send input to Microsoft under the form of either a smile, for positive feedback, or a frown for negative comments.

Microsoft's annual partner conference is winding down with just the regional break-out sessions and the big blow-out party standing out on Day 4. Will Microsoft Azure Promote Efficient Software Development? (CNET)
Microsoft's announcement of Windows Azure pricing confirmed a lot of speculation about the nature of Azure and its target audiences. First, Microsoft plans to compete directly with infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) vendors, especially market pioneer and leader Amazon Web Services. As CNET's Ina Fried reported: On a pure consumption basis, Microsoft said it will charge 12 cents per hour for computing, 15 cents per gigabyte for storage and 10 cents per 10,000 storage transactions. For network bandwidth, the software maker is charging between 10 cents and 15 cents per gigabyte.

Creating a Custom View that Filters on the Current User or [Me] (SharePoint Blogs)

The few bits I’ve managed to glean about Office 2010 so far have made it seem that SharePoint 2010 is the family member most likely to be tweaked the most. (The rest of the Office 2010 (”Office 14″) suite sounds like it will be getting relatively minor updates.)

SharePoint 2010 will Require 64-bit SQL Server (Computer World)
SharePoint 2010 will require a 64-bit version of SQL Server and it will not support Internet Explorer 6, according to Microsoft. At the company’s annual TechEd conference, Microsoft also revealed that SharePoint 2010 will not be available with the Office 2010 beta that it plans to ship in July.

But don't let the lackluster turnout or the global economic crisis that's behind it get in the way of the news. Because there's a lot to tell.

Dipping Into the Windows 7 Mailbag (CNET)
With Windows 7 reaching the near-final stage and due out later this year, lots of folks are trying to get their heads around the next version of the operating system. I've gotten a lot of questions from readers, mostly centered on key issues such as what Windows 7 has to offer, whether it will work with their existing software, and if they should buy a PC now or wait for Microsoft to offer Windows 7, or at least a free upgrade. In this post, I will try to tackle some of those issues.

Software as a Service Comes of Age (Biz Community)
The idea of buying software as an ongoing service rather than a shrink-wrapped product is not particularly new. Buying software as a service (SaaS) is a bit like buying a pay TV subscription: you're paying for something to happen, whether it's having your payroll processed or being entertained. By contrast, buying software as a product is like buying a microwave or a TV: there's an assumption that you'll plug it in, use it until it's no longer working and then buy a new one (that's what upgrades really come down to).

Microsoft introduced the second beta of its Geneva identity-management server platform on Monday, with new features including compatibility with SharePoint 2007 and Microsoft Federation Gateway.

Office 2010 Will Run on XP SP3, Vista, and Windows 7 (Softpedia)
Microsoft is currently hard at work building the next iteration of the Office System. Labeled Office 2010 and formerly codenamed Office 14, the successor of Office 2007 will be designed to play nice not only with the next version of the Windows client, but also with its precursors, namely Windows Vista and Windows XP (Service Pack 3), reveals Reed Shaffner, Office TPM. At the same time, Office 2010 will come in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors, set up to adapt to the respective architecture of the underlying Windows platform. One important aspect worth noting is that Microsoft has striven to fit Office 2010 on the same hardware as Office 2007, and in this respect save customers the cost of a computer upgrade.

Opinion: Gates was Visionary with .NET and Windows Azure (Geek.com)
An article by John Stokes on Ars Technica this morning caught my eye, and has since sent me on a mission to write this article. Stokes talks about the rumors that Microsoft may be working on an ARM port of its Windows 7 operating system. Stokes goes through a list of reasons why such an idea would be a bad one — namely because so much Windows software is built around the x86 software environment. However, I think there is a much bigger reality taking place that many are just beginning to see the first true signs of: Microsoft has been planning its escape from x86 ties for years with .NET.

SharePoint Performance and File Groups for Temp db, Search db, and Content dbs (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
I just finished the Large SharePoint and SQL session at TechEd. One of the things Paul demo'ed in the session was multiple files for the content database. In the past the temp db was the only database that was supported with file groups since SharePoint databases hadn't supported them. More recently with the testing that was done, file groups are now supported on search, temp, and content databases. I knew that search and temp db were supported, but didn't think that content was supported. That's legacy. Paul is right. (Sorry Paul.) Content database file groups are supported and this is clearly documented on "Technet article: Physical storage recommendations (Office SharePoint Server)" updated April 23, 09.
