SharePoint a 'Rolls Royce Ashtray': Exec (ZDNet)
Microsoft's SharePoint software is like a "Rolls Royce ashtray" for government departments: it's free with the car but it doesn't add much, according to Bryan King, director of strategy and innovation with the South Australian Chief Information Office. Speaking at the Open Source Software Pacific Area Conference yesterday, King said that government departments were "trapped" into using certain parts of packaged vendorware that may not be useful for them, and that was an obstacle in moving to open source.

Browser Makers Trade Barbs Over Speed Moves (Computerworld)
With Microsoft set to launch the first beta of a significantly faster Internet Explorer later today, wrangling for pride of place in hardware acceleration is heating up, and getting some rivals hot under the collar. Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) will tap Windows Vista and Windows 7 PCs' graphics processors to speed up rendering, assembling and displaying a browser page. Microsoft has touted the technique, called "hardware acceleration," since it announced IE9 almost a year ago, and has been aggressively promoting the technology since last March, when it rolled out the first preview.

Microsoft has won unlikely support for the latest version of its Internet Explorer browser, with the lead manager of Google’s rival product praising the company for setting the pace in software for accessing the web. “We’re really welcoming the innovation and excited about more standards support [from Microsoft],” says Brian Rakowski.

International Windows Phone 7 Devices Missing Features? (InformationWeek)
Here is an interesting rumor that has a ring of truth to it. Some of the more hyped features of Windows Phone 7 may not make it to countries that don't speak English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, at least not initially. If true, how much will this hurt the platform's launch?

Elliot Curtis, director of the North American partner hosting channel for the communications sector, delivered the second session Tuesday morning at the Hosting & Cloud Transformation Summit, during which he set out to discuss Microsoft’s feeling and approach about the cloud, generally. What has changed in the last 12 months or so, he says, is that the cloud has really captured the imagination of the IT industry.

Bing Beats Yahoo in Search, a Symbolic Win (PCWorld)
Bing's vault over Yahoo in U.S. search volume should come as no surprise to anyone who's been following the horse race, but it's a symbolic milestone for a baby search engine whose prime directive is to take some of Google's advertising pie. With Yahoo out of the way, according to the latest search share statistics from Nielsen, Bing's goal of becoming a genuine competitor to Google becomes a little more realistic. Bing, along with MSN and Windows Live, now has 13.9 percent of all search share. Yahoo fell to 13.1 percent, and Google still dominates with 65.1 percent. As Search Engine Land points out, Bing is still in third place by other metrics from comScore and Hitwise.

As Congress returns to Washington after this weekend's somber anniversary, the conversation on Capitol Hill will inevitably shift to the midterm elections. The White House is faced with high unemployment, the long war abroad and domestic priorities that range from education to energy policy to immigration to cybersecurity. In that context, it might be easy for citizens and officials alike to let deep discussion of open government be subsumed under the tsunami of partisan rancor, entertainment news and horse race coverage of the elections. That would be a mistake. There are legitimate arguments to be had about the tech policy choices of Congress and the White House, and they will no doubt be on display in the pages of the country's newspapers and hotly debated in comment threads.

I wanted to add a link into SharePoint 2010′s Central Administration. I knew that this could be achieved with custom actions as I had researched and used them before in SharePoint 2007 to add items to the context menu and form toolbars. So I created my custom action in Visual Studio which was easy enough, but I couldn’t seem to figure out what the Location attribute should be set to in order to get my link displaying in the right place in central admin.
