SharePoint Price Calculator

We often hear questions from clients about how licensing works for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server.  Pricing for MOSS can be complex, especially when calculating the cost of optional products.  For your convenience and information, we've developed the SharePoint Price Calculator.  This tool can help you develop a good ballpark estimate of your total licensing expenditures.

* Results reflect data collected as of 08/08/2008

As a disclaimer, all of the information presented here is based upon publicly available information provided by Microsoft, in US Dollars and is current as of the effective date listed above. You should only use this tool to generate a ballpark estimate.  The best and only method for obtaining accurate costs is to contact a Microsoft Licensing Specialist.  Many factors may affect your specific situation, including a volume licensing agreement.

Here are some additional issues to consider regarding MOSS licensing:

Every server requires in your SharePoint farm requires a Windows 2003 Server License. You can use Standard licensing unless your configuration requires an Enterprise license.  You will need CALs (Clien Access Licenses) unless all content is accessed only via Internet facing sites.

WSS is free as part of Windows Server. But you do need proper licenses for Windows 2003 servers and SQL servers.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Server License (MOSS).  You will need this license run MOSS  2007. You will also need the requisite number of Client Access Licenses (CALs) for each employee accessing the server, including employees who are accessing the server via Extranet sites.

MOSS Enterprise.  Is an addition to the Standard MOSS license.  There is no Enterprise server license, you just need Enterprise CALs in addition to the Standard CAL. You can not mix Standard and Enterprise licenses in a farm.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Internet sites (MOSSFIS).  You need this license in order to create Internet-facing SharePoint sites for non-employees.  This license has all the features of the Enterprise Edition of Office SharePoint Server.  You do not need Client Access Licenses.

Windows External Connectors.  Required if you are using MOSSFIS.  Each Web Front End server definitely requires an External Connector license. There is some confusion about whether you really need External Connector license for every box in your farm.

Microsoft Office Forms Server 2007 Server License. You only need this optional license if you are using a MOSS Standard license, but want InfoPath form capabilities.  This feature is included with the MOSS Enterprise license.  Note that you do need CALs for the Forms server.

Microsoft Office Forms Server for Internet Sites.  Required if you are using Forms Server for Internet facing sites for non-employees.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search, Standard Edition Server License.  This option allow you to extend the search functionalities beyond site search.  The Standard Edition is limited to 500,000 items and a single index database.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search, Enterprise Edition Server License.  Same functionality as MOSS 2007 for Search Server but does not have any limit.
