Coming VERY late to the party, but Ali - have you resorted to simply turning off content approval?

We turned it off within a few weeks of launching - too many headaches.

My users drag & drop using Explorer view and the docs just appear on the page.

I can see a solution that would give you most of what you want:

1) Create a new Content Type based on the Folder Content Type called, say, "Document Folder."

2) In the Document Library, under Advanced Settings allow Managed Content Types. Add the new Folder Content Type to the Library.

3) Under Advanced Settings, for " Display "New Folder" command on the New menu? " select No.

4) In SharePoint designer, create a workflow based on the Document Folder Content Type. Set it to send an email on creation. The tricky part is getting the right address list. Users won't be able to subscribe themselves - the easiest thing would be for the email to go to a SharePoint group.

Hi John-

Is it possible to create alerts for Folders only? I am trying to make sure users do not create extra folders in certain lists but still have the ability to create documents in that list.

EricJ - You are correct, sir. I found this official Microsoft page which confirms that the MSNBC Web Parts were discontinued (and almost 3 years ago now, which I suppose helps explain why I had never encountered them before):

The MSNBC web parts were deprecated and I don't think they're even available anymore. In fact, I think it was the disappearance of the MSNBC Weather Web Part that provided the impetus for Bamboo to offer the Time and Weather Web Part to the community. (For which I thank you often!)

Hiya, Larry - I was unaware of this distinction between the "full' rights of an individual user vs. their rights as a member of a "Site Owners" group.

Update: As of 8 December 2009, testing this functionality on the SP 2010 Beta 2 version, the behavior is exactly the same - once you create a Grouped view on the slide library, the selection checkbox disappears from the view (even though the view settings show that the selection checkbox is included in the view).

I recently had a situation that is somewhat related. I received a call indicating a problem a user was having. They asked for access to a site, and an admin had added them to the site permissions. They needed full control, so that had been granted. However, this newly added person found that, despite having full control, they were unable to add new people to the site.

The issue was that they were added to the site as an individual, and not as a member to any group. Thus, even though their permissions were "full", because they were not a member of the "Site Owners" group (which was identified as the owner of the "Site Members" group") they were unable to add new members. I added them to the appropriate group, verified the group was the owner of the groups that needed to be maintained, and then walked the user through adding members to verify that we got all the pieces set right.
