I have downloaded the trial version of the Group Redirect Web Part.  I tested the Web Part using Active Directory groups and the Redirect worked perfectly.  I then configured the Web Part to use a SharePoint Group in which included a Active Directory Group.  I logged in using a user from the Active Directory group but it did not redirect.  The only way I was able to get the user to redirect was to explicitly add this user in SharePoint and add the user to the SharePoint Group.

My question is this becuase the web part can only "look" and find users explicity defined within the SharePoint group and cannot look back into Active Directory?  If this is the case I assume that my only option is to either individually add the users to SharePoint or use Active Directory groups for the redirect?

thanks in advance for anyones assistance,

trieke,

Yes, you are correct in that it can either look for the user in AD or SharePoint - but not both.  One thing you could try is two add two Group Redirect Web Parts to the same page.  Config one to act against the AD groups and the other to handle the SharePoint Group members.  You won't be able to determine which Web Part redirect is handled first, but as long as membership in either of these groups triggers a redirect, not a "stay here", then you will be ok.

Just so you know, I have not actually tested this scenario with two Group Redirect Web Parts working together in the manner you describe.  I have it on good authority that this "should work" - so I wanted to pass along the potential solution.  I will try it myself when I have some spare time later this week.  Let me know if you get to it before I do and have a result to report either way.

Thanks.

 Thank you WesBryan,

I appreciate your help, but I don't think I was clear in my first post.  Basically, I have a SharePoint Group which is tied to a AD Group and what I am trying to do is configure the security in the redirect web part using the SharePoint group so I don't have to actually configure an AD login within the web part.

Do you happen to know if this should be able to work or not?  I was not able to get this to work but I wanted to make sure whether or not this would work with the product or not.

thanks again,

 trieke,

No, unfortunately the Group Redirect Web Part will not be able to map SharePoint users to their membership in an AD group through the SP Group.

Best of luck in finding a solution.  If we can be of any help, then let us know.

Cheers,

Wes

Hi Treike,

We are having the same problem on our site with an Active Directory Group that contains no individual members, but a number of nested groups that do contain individual members.

Eg. "Staff All" is made up of "Staff Junior" + "Staff Senior"

If we put in individual groups of "Staff Junior" + "Staff Senior" redirect works because it is recognising the individual members.

However, if we put in "Staff All" it is not working.

Please note this is much more complex than just these 2 groups (eg. "Students Junior" is also made up of student groups for each year level etc.) which we also need to use the Group Redirect with.

Any suggestions for resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Jenny

Wait - so if I'm hearing Bamboo correctly, this web part does not:

A) work with AD groups inside SP groups; or

B) read into nested AD groups?

I also notice that even when I explicitly put an AD group in my site security, I still see "None" in the AD Group dropdown.  So I guess I'll need to pay even more to get the functionality that was supposed to be "in there" to begin with, assuming Bamboo "gets around" to "fixing" something it clearly doesn't see as a problem .  Angry
