WSS 3.0 hangs for ages if weather.msn.com cannot be accessed/has problems

I've been trialing this webpart for a while and I've noticed that if there's a problem with weather.msn.com, e.g. it cannot be accessed for any reason, then the webpart seems to stall for a VERY long time making it appear as if WSS 3.0 has failed. WSS 3.0 will eventualy load but by the time it does you have presumed that something's gone terribly wrong with the server hosting it.

Is there are way of altering this webpart so that if it cannot get a reposnse from weather.msn.com very quickly it will imediately give up so that the WSS 3.0 site loads as quickly as possible ?.

We apologize you are encountering this issue.  We have posted a bug for review in a future release.  We also provide source code for this specific product at Codeplex if you have a development team availaible to you for a more immediate resolution.
